Elderberry Syrup

Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) Syrup

Elderberries have antiviral properties, helping prevent and speed recovery from colds and flu. This syrup is a convenient and tasty way to ingest the medicinal properties of the berries.

Dosage:  1 tsp can be taken daily to improve immune system, or 1 tsp every 2-3 hours at the onset of illness.

Elderberry Syrup Recipe

Ingredients:

1 cup dried elderberries
1 TBS dried orange peel
2 tsp dried ginger root
2 tsp cinnamon chips
1/2 tsp whole peppercorns
2 cardamom pods
2 whole cloves
3 cups water

 

 

Process:

Place all of the ingredients listed above into a medium size sauce pan.

Bring all the ingredients to a boil, then lower to a simmer for 20 minutes, then allow to cool.

Pour the mixture through a strainer and cheesecloth, squeezing it well to get most of the elderberry juice from the mixture.

 

    

 

The resulting liquid was measured:  500 ml.  An equal part of honey was measured and added to the liquid to make the final syrup.

The syrup was poured into individual glass bottles and labeled:
